BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012 – Who will win?

On Sunday 16th December 2012 the Excel arena in London will host the unveiling of the much anticipated 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. In what has been the greatest year in the history of British sport, the panel of experts face an unenviable job just short-listing the 12 candidates.  The panel will include former SPOTY winners and Olympians Sir Steve Redgrave, Denise Lewis and Baroness Grey-Thomson. There have been some amazing achievements by the sports-men and women this year and below are Team Konkura’s thoughts on the contenders and their chances:-

Winning the Tour de France would make an athlete favorite to win the award in any normal year. Couple that with an Olympic Gold, humorous personality and novelty side-burns, and  it’s ‘done and dusted’, Wiggins is the winner! However, as allured to, this is no ordinary year! Whilst Bradley is currently a 6/5 favorite to win with the bookies, the length of these odds show that it is no for-gone conclusion. With the current Lance Armstrong affair lingering over cycling, Wiggins achievements may be unfairly overshadowed.

Again, in any other year Murray would have been a certainty to win the coveted prize. Becoming the first Brit to reach the men’s Wimbledon final was superseded by Olympic Gold. He then went on to win the US Open with an epic 5 set victory over Novak Djokovic. In doing so he became the first British player to win a Grand Slam in the 76 years since Fred Perry triumphed.  Whilst Murray’s isn’t always portrayed as the happiest of individuals, his emotional display after losing to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final gained the Scot many new fans. The 5/2 odds which can be taken on Murray defy the magnitude of his achievements in 2012.

Who can forget the ‘Mobot’? This summer’s Saturday nights certainly had the X Factor as Farrah destroyed the fields on successive Saturday’s to claim Olympic Gold in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metre races. The infectious smile and relaxed persona are sure to get many votes coming his way. At 5/2,  Farrah is most definitely in with a shout.

The BBC received a fair amount of stick last year when there were no female sports stars in the 12 candidate short-list. They will have no such complaints this year, not just because they have changed the rules to eliminate such a scenario, but also due to ‘Golden Girl’ Jessica’s achievements.  Numerous dominating performances  in the Heptathlon events saw  her win a gold and cement her place in the hearts of the nation. If judging was based on the number posters up in at Team Konkura’s HQ, Ennis would win this by a mile! At 10-1 she looks good value for money, and boy, she’s looks good!!

Imagine Usain Bolt winning the marathon or Paula Radcliffe triumphing in the 200 metres. In winning Olympic gold’s in the 800m, 1500m, 5000m  and marathon , Weir proved he is the man over any distance.  With his 4 gold haul taking his overall Olympic medal tally to 10, Weir looks certain to go down in history as the greatest wheelchair athlete of all-time. A 25/1 outsider for the SPOTY title, can he defy the odds yet again?
