Top Sportsmen and Women – July 2012

Each month I will be adding a list of Sportsmen and Women who I feel have excelled in their field of expertise. Here goes:-
1)      Bradley Wiggins (cycling) – Tour de France win seals his greatness.
2)      Fernando Alonso (motor racing) – Back to his best and keeping Vettel and Webber at bay.
3)      Ernie Els (golf) – rolled back the years to win the Open Championship
4)      Anderson Silva (MMA) – will this guy ever get beat again?
5)      David Haye (boxing) – put his name in the frame for a World title shot after beating Chisora.

Ernie Els wins the British Open 2012 as it all goes wrong for Adam Scott.

ErnieEls claimed victory in the 2012 Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes as Australian Adam Scott blew a 4 shot lead. Whilst Els had a magnificent final round it looked to be a side-note as Scott played the first 14 holes calmly and consistently. However, with golf it certainly isn’t over until the scores have been posted. Suddenly ‘Par’ seemed to be the hardest word for Scott as he went on a run of bogeys which turned his dream into a nightmare. With Els finishedand on 7 under bogeys on the 15th, 16th and 17th had the 32 year old Australian sweating.
After hitting a 3 wood into a bunker on the 18th, Scott was in the last chance saloon as he stood over a 7 foot par putt to force a playoff. Agonizingly it stayed just left of the cup, and Scott dropped to his knees in despair. The Big Easy’s name was on the Claret Jug again

Bradley Wiggins becomes the first British Rider to win the Tour De France

Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins re-wrote the history books by becoming the first British rider to win the Tour De France.  It was a great day for British cycling all round as the brilliant Chris Froome took 2nd place overall and fellow Olympian Mark Cavendish won the final stage, sprinting down the Champs Elysees to share the glory.
There was to be no last day agony for Wiggins, who safely negotiated himself around Paris , to complete the formalities after Saturday's awesome  time-trial victory gave him an almost untouchable lead.

Amir Khan stopped by Danny Garcia

Amir Khan's career lays in tatters after a brutal fourth round stoppage at the hands of unbeaten American Danny Garcia. In a packed Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas,  Khan started well with Garcia seeming to have no answer to the speed Amir was bringing to the table. Khan caught Garcia in the 2nd round, opening up a nasty cut just above the American's right eye. Coming out for the 3rd Khan must have been confident he had Garcia's number, but that all changed with a great shot from no-where. It knocked Khan to the canvas and whilst the Brit bravely got to his feet he was on wobbly legs. He somehow managed to see the round out, but look 'spaced out' in his corner. He got up for the 4th round and seemed to have recovered somewhat. However, Garcia sensed blood and every shot landed seemed to have an impact every-time he landed. He sent Khan to the canvas again and when a shot hit Khan's forehead the fight was over. Khan said afterwards he felt he could of continued, but most felt he could have few complaints. Garcia now has the boxing World at his feet, 24-0 and only 24 years old. Where now for Khan? A fight against Kell Brook may be on the horizon.

Haye beats Chisora by stunning knock-out

Former Heavyweight and undisputed Cruiserweight David Haye put on a master class of speed and power to stop Dereck Chisora in five rounds at Upton Park last night. After four cagey rounds where the bigger Chisora was having some success with his come forward style, Haye exploded in the fifth with a four punch combination which saw Chisora hit the canvas for the first time in his career. Chisora bravely got back up and continued to come forward, but when another combination landed the fight was over. Haye now has his sights firmly set on Vitali Klitschko who laboured to a points victory over Chisora earlier in the year. Haye's brutal knock-out of the granite chinned Chisora is sure to send shockwaves round the Heavyweight division.
Where does Dereck Chisora go now? Redemption may come in the form of Tyson fury or David Price, but will the risk / reward ratio be tempting enough for those undefeated fighters now that Del Boy has a record of 15 wins with 4 losses?

Konkura Competitor: Laura London

Laura London is a certified fitness and nutrition coach whose mission is to help women get in the best shape of their lives and be the best they can be at any age.

From an early age, Laura struggled with weight, being denied the opportunity to participate in sports due to her older brother’s rare blood condition that prohibited her from engaging in physical activities as a means of protection for her as well as him, to later becoming a mom of 3 with a busy schedule that invariably led to lack of self-care, excess weight and hormonal issues.

Fast forward to the age of 43, Laura decided enough was enough and it was time to get in shape. Despite the challenges women in their 40’s face, Laura was determined to be the exception and show the rest of the world how they could be too. By changing her diet, setting goals and adding in more exercise, Laura quickly shed 20 pounds and wound up changing the face of figure competitions for moms and veterans alike.

Laura then became unstoppable, becoming a nationally certified personal trainer with NSCA and one of the few chosen worldwide to be in the premier class of JNL Fusion Method VIP Celebrity Trainers. She later on went on to study nutrition at the largest nutrition school in the world, Integrative Nutrition in NYC, as well as becoming an award winning national figure competitor, competing in various fitness competitions nationwide and ultimately voted “2010 Over 40 Transformation of the Year” by BodyBuilding.com.

Laura’s long list of accomplishments would impress the best of the best, including launching her own fitness DVD’s, calendars, and workout wear, in addition to being featured as an up and coming fitness model at the Fitness Model Factory in Miami, on You Tube videos, magazine covers, and infomercials, and is a widely recognized and respected international spokesperson on fitness for countless media and radio outlets. In 2012, she dropped her highly anticipated e book 7 Day Goddess Juice Feast which revealed why diets don’t work and how daily juicing is the key to overall detoxification, vitality and lasting weight loss along with a second e book called The Lower Body Transformation.

Laura’s teachings emphasize the virtues of green, organic living and has built a thriving online practice coaching clients based on these principles. Her devotion to her newfound profession is evidenced by her day-to-day life which includes a daily regimented workout and a healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, nut, legumes, and clean, organic protein.

Originally from Connecticut, Laura relocated to Boca Raton, Florida in the late 1990’s and still resides there with her husband of over 20 years and three children, (insert names). Wladimir Klitschko takes out Tony Thompson again.

Wladimir Klitschko kept his stranglehold on the heavyweight division with a 6th round stoppage of American Tony  Thompson. Thompson started well winning the 1st round before Wlad got his piston –like jab going. By the 5th Thompson had slowed down dramatically and was floored by a big shot from the champ. He did well to beat the count and Wlad seemed keen to let him see the next round by standing off rather than unleashing a combination which would have surely ended the fight. Not that we had long to wait for the end, as a barrage of punching from Wlad so Thompson bundled to the canvas in a heap. He gamely got to his feet on the 7 count, but the referee waved the fight off to save him from further punishment. Thompson appeared to have no complaints. Wlad will now be eagerly watching the David Haye vs Derek Chisora fight to see if there is a potential opponent there. He will also be aware of the progress fellow giants David Price and Tyson Fury are making.

Interval Training: 15 minutes per day, 3 days a week

I have recently added interval training to my schedule due to it’s proven benefits. 3 times a week I complete 15 minutes on either the cross-trainer, running machine, bike or rowing machine doing the following sequence:-
* 1 minute very slow pace
* 1 minute as fast as possible
* 2 minutes very slow pace
* 1 minute as fast as possible
 * 2 minutes very slow pace
* 1 minute as fast as possible
* 2 minutes very slow pace
* 1 minute as fast as possible
* 1 minute very slow pace
* 30 seconds as fast as possible
* 1 minute very slow pace
* 30 seconds as fast as possible
* 30 seconds very slow pace
* 30 seconds as fast as possible

Anyone up for a challenge?

As regular readers of my blog will be aware I am a big fan of the fitness challenge site Konkura.com.  I regularly post challenges on here which I enjoy or am participating in. At the moment I’m hooked on the Push-ups in One Minute challenge.  I have been doing this for a week now and have increased my score from 70 to 79 – that’s progress. I’m currently 16th on the leader-board but have aspirations on a top  10 spot! If you want to join in the competition go to:

Tyson Fury: On the road to heavyweight stardom?

Tyson Fury took another step towards a fight against Wladimir Klitschko with a fifth stoppage of game but limited New Yorker Vinny  Maddalone to win the WBO Intercontinental Heavyweight title.  6ft 9inch Fury controlled the fight from the start, landing heavy punches which eventually opened a nasty cut over Maddalone’s left eye.  Fury seemed to ease off and wanted the referee to step in towards the end – something he won’t be able to do against higher level opposition. Who next for Fury? I’d personally like to see him in with Seth Mitchell or David Price, but talented Pole Tomasz Adamek seems a likely opponent and a massive step up in class for the undefeated contender.

Kell Brook taken to the limit.

Kell Brook beat Carson Jones on points  in the hardest fight of his career so far. Kell looked to be coasting to an easy win and stoppage as he pounded Jones from all angles in the first 5 rounds. Jones wasn’t landing, but was gamely walking forward somewhat impervious to Brook’s shots. In the sixth round the fight changed and Jones swarming come forward style suddenly ruffled Brook. He landed many big shots and had Brook hanging on towards the end. One judge scored the fight a draw with the other two in favour of Brook, who now will be looking to fight the winner of Alexander v Bailey for a World Title. Brook went to hospital after the fight with a suspected broken nose, but with his unbeaten record still in place.
