ErnieEls claimed victory in the 2012 Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes as
Australian Adam Scott blew a 4 shot lead. Whilst Els had a magnificent final
round it looked to be a side-note as Scott played the first 14 holes calmly and
consistently. However, with golf it certainly isn’t over until the scores have
been posted. Suddenly ‘Par’ seemed to be the hardest word for Scott as he went
on a run of bogeys which turned his dream into a nightmare. With Els finishedand on 7 under bogeys on the 15th, 16th and 17th
had the 32 year old Australian sweating.
After hitting a 3 wood into a bunker on
the 18th, Scott was in the last chance saloon as he stood over a 7 foot par
putt to force a playoff. Agonizingly it stayed just left of the cup, and Scott
dropped to his knees in despair. The Big Easy’s name was on the Claret Jug again.
